After the war, on nice days Lee was in the habit of riding Traveller around Lexington. On one occasion he was caught in a terrible storm and flash flood and found he was not going to be able to get back to Lexington. As a result he spent the night with one of his old veterans up on the hillside. It was a poor house and they didn't have too much furniture, but finally Lee was persuaded to go to bed when the man agreed that they would sleep together and his wife would sleep with the children. And so they spent the night, Lee and his old soldier, in the same bed.
They next day the old soldier was telling his friends about Lee having spent the night in his home.
"Where did he sleep?" they wanted to know.
"Why, he slept with me," he replied.
"How did it feel?"
"I'll tell you, I never closed an eye. I didn't sleep a wink. I might have slept with God."
